Changu Nata

The Changu nata is performed by the Bhuiyan, Kharia, Juang, Mechi, Bathudi and Kondh jaati living in Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Kandhamal and Mayurbhanj. Changu is the name of the instrument, similar to a tambourine, which is played during the performance.

The men play and sing songs while the women dance. The men can sometimes perform simple steps, stepping forward and back, accompanying the women. They also perform stunts by jumping up in the air and circling. Other variety of movements used by the women is when they half-sit and move vigorously from side to side.

The Changu nata is also performed by young boys and girls during festivals. Drums accompany the performance to lend a vigorous beat to the songs.
